$3 Halloween project

Here is an easy Halloween decoration that you can make in less than an hour for just $3!  I'm linking up to Melissa's under $10 under 1 Hour party today!  Click read more below for detailed instructions on how to make this.

I went to the Dollar Tree and bought one black crow (I usually rummage through the box to find the best looking ones~some of them at my dollar tree looked pretty sad!  I like the ones with their heads cocked to the side)

I bought one 9 1/2" tall glass vase

 and one candle pillar base...

You will also need a rock or a block of wood that will fit under the vase after it is turned upside down.

Step 1: I took the cardboard base and tag off the crow.  Then I cut off the wires that were keeping him attached to the cardboard (just bend them back and forth a few times and they will break, or use wire cutters)

Step 2: I centered the crow on the rock and hot glued his feet to it.

Step 3: I typed the words "Specimen No. 11" in microsoft word and printed it out onto white cardstock.  I used Times New Roman font and a font size of 16.  I used font size 20 on the number eleven to make it bigger.

Step 4: Next I cut a rectangle around the words to create a "tag".  I poked one end of the tag with a safety pin and strung white dental floss through the pin hole before tying it around the crow's foot.  (I didn't have string) :)

Step 5: I centered the rock/crow on the candle base, and then turned the glass vase over on top of it.

That's it!~  a $3 craft done in about 20 minutes!
I also added some branches from my yard and made a vignette:
I took an old lampshade and cut off all the ribbing and fabric to strip it down to its bare "bones".

I also bought this 4x6 black frame at the dollar tree, printed "boo" onto white cardstock in century gothic size 72 font

I centered the glass from the frame around the word, and traced around it in pencil...

I cut it out, stuck it in the frame, and put it on this $1 easel from dollar tree as well.

There are lots of fun things you can do.  Just play around with it.  Maybe add a pumpkin or some fake spider web.  Be sure to check out all of the other great projects at Melissa's party!

  10. Super cute - you inspire me! P.S. I just saw a black crow at Jo Ann's today on my lunch break for $12.99 - but it was 50% off. Still you got a great deal. I loved the crow but went pish over spending $6.50 on it. Now I'll check dollar tree.
