Don't be afraid to paint the ceiling black!

We bought an older home with a small master bathroom and no character.  Because I know that paint can completely transform a room, and having been inspired by magazines and my favorite boutiques, I decided to make a statement in this little room by painting the ceiling black and adding a chandelier.
This is what it looked like before...

and after:

The old school of thought was that white walls are necessary when square footage is limited.  But, dark colors actually add depth to small rooms.  Painting a ceiling black actually helps a room feel taller and adds more character.  And guess what?  It doesn't seem any darker in my little bathroom.  I LOVE it!  The chandelier came from walmart (I bought the last two last year including the floor model for $30 each)  I have a soffet (is that how you spell it?) around the shower, so I painted about 12" down from the ceiling also.  My shower curtain is an old sheet (we'll save that tutorial for another day) :).  I think I might replace it soon with a white ruffled one.

  2. Hi Marjie! Do you have a color pallet that you are planning to use throughout the house? I would start there. Pick out the paint colors that you like, and make sure they "flow" throughout the house. For example, if you paint the walls green in one room and blue in an adjoining room, then its a good idea to have the same shade of blue in accents (such as pillows or candles) in the green walled room to tie them together.

  5. Fabulous! I'm sure extending the black paint down the soffit added wonderful drama to the room. I applaud your courage.

  6. I painted my bathroom ceiling black several years ago and still LOVE IT. I added a wide styofoam crown molding that I painted black. I also have a chandelier over the tub area. Lots of drama but with 9.5 ft. ceilings it is great. I just found your blog. I'm looking forward to exploring it further.

  7. My husband and I re-did a commercial space with black paint on the ceiling, and all I can say is it made it look "updated" and brought it to a whole new level. Everyone commented on what a difference the paint made...Your bathroom looks classy :) Jenny
