Decorating with sheets 101

There are probably one hundred ways that you can use sheets to decorate your home besides using them as actual bedding.  Sheets can be turned into shower curtains like I did here, duvet covers, tablecloths and lots more.  Here are five things that I made easily out of  just ONE KING SHEET SET! (that only cost $39.99 from TJ Maxx)...

This was the pattern of the sheet set that I bought.  I fell in love with it when I saw it!

I recovered six dining room chairs...

and a  no sew curtain for the guest room.  I used the flat sheet for this because the edges were already finished.  Then I folded down the top of the sheet to make a "built in" valance look and "clamped" the fabric with the curtain rod rings that have "clamps" on them!   I don't know what you call those things-but I love them!!! You can buy them everywhere.  (JoAnns, hobby lobby, Target etc.)  They don't put any holes in the sheet so if I wanted to, I could use it for something else later.  Sometimes I clip a white sheet as "lining" to the back of the sheet so that when you are looking at the windows from the outside, you don't see a busy pattern.

Hiding underneath this faux headboard is a body pillow.  I took the two king pillowcases from the sheet set and put one on each end, overlapping them in the middle.

This was a square that I cut from the fitted sheet to top an ugly, plain, round plywood end table (I think you know the kind I am talking about).  The white fabric underneath is an old linen tablecloth from an antique store.

I also used the part of the same fitted sheet for this chair (that was sewn by my local seamstress).

And... I still had fabric left over!  If I wanted to I could use the rest to cover lampshades, make pillows, or sew a funky skirt. :)   So, there are lots of great things that you can use the fabric for just from a humble, simple little sheet set!

  2. Wow! I had no idea! We are currently in the process of moving to a different house that doesn't have any window coverings! I've been a little overwhelmed at the idea of having to make so many. The sheet idea is great!

  3. Amanda, another thing that I like about this idea is that it is a lot less expensive than custom blinds. Also, I think it is important to have as much natural light come into the room as possible during the day. This way all you have to do is pull it across the rod at night for privacy instead of messing with cords! Old white linen tablecloths work well also!

  4. Because of you and your awesome curtain that you had in your bedroom in Michigan, all my windows have sheets for curtains. No sew simple!

  6. Sheets are such a cost effective way to decorate. I've used them for years in sooo many projects. Funny, I think ever sheet I own for bedding has come from TJ Maxx. ;)
