"Based on the bestseller by Catherine Marshall, Christy tells the story of an idealistic nineteen year old who leaves the comforts of her city home to teach school in the impoverished Appalachian community of Cutter Gap, Tennessee in 1912. Strength, determination, and faith guide young Christy Huddleston through unforeseen difficulties, help her to gain understanding of the proud mountain people, and win her mentorship, friendship, and the love of two men." (summary from here)
The book Christy by Catherine Marshall has been on my reading list for quite some time. My sister in law recommended it on a couple of different occasions, and I planned on reading it...sometime. Although I like to read, I can't ever seem to sit still long enough to do so anymore, and I always feel like I have other things that I need to be doing instead. Anyway, I found the complete DVD series of the book at Sams Club over Christmas and decided that since I hadn't read the book yet, I might as well buy the DVD! (thankfully my other sister in law still has a membership to Sams, so I was able to tag along) I think it was around $13 for the set. That's 4 disks front and back. A total of 16 hours and 45 minutes of viewing pleasure for my 8 year old and me! We definitely got our money's worth! Each night my daughter says, "Mom, can we watch Christy?" We love watching it together.
I'm always on the lookout for good, clean movies. Do you have any recommendations?!
My husband and I are in love with the BBC series "Larkrise to Candleford". Also, in the past we have fallen in love with "All creatures great and small" and "Emily of New Moon." But of all of the three, the best, I believe is Larkrise to Candleford. It too is about a young lady who faces challenges. This time she leaves her poor home and family in Larkrise to work in Candleford. The series, which is now filming season #4 is about the interactions between poor Larkrise and rich Candleford. If you haven't seen it yet, you will LOVE IT, too! They say you can watch these BBC movies on your computer, but I'm not sure how. If you would like to know, though, drop me an email and I will find out for you.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen 'That Think You Do?' It's a fun one.
ReplyDeletehmmm, my comment disappeared! Thank you so much for your movie suggestions~I haven't seen any of those movies! I know BBC has some good ones. My friend just told me that she read the book Larkrise to Candleford and that it was really good. I can't wait to watch it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up, I haven't seen this one but I'll be on the lookout for it now. My girls and I love Pollyanna and Anne of Green Gables. Both were favorites of my when I was little.
ReplyDeleteI think we will watch Anne of Green Gables next (loved that movie when I was little too) I've seen it at our library. Also, my daughter just read Pollyanna~great idea! Thanks
ReplyDeleteI am actually named after this book. :) My mom read it when she was pregnant with me (1972), fell in love with the character & named me after her. I have a copy of the book somewhere, would you believe I have never read it? Must find it!
ReplyDeleteThe "Love Comes Softly" Series by Janette Oke. Good, clean, family movies.
ReplyDeleteI like this movie too, but you should still read the book. It's one of my all time favorites.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the movie "The Young Victoria?" It's really good.
